A DAD was horrified to discover his five-year-old son had shredded banknotes worth £5,500 while playing.

The peeved parent, named only as Mr Gao, saw the torn tender covering his bed and floor after he returned home from a trip to the shops.

He gathered up the thousands of pieces of paper and took them to the bank in a bid to replace them.

But the bank refused to exchange the notes, which Mr Gao, from Qingdao in China, borrowed to invest in his business.

Staff told him he will need to tape the 500 notes back together before they can even look at giving him his cash back.

Undeterred, the father, who kept the money in a drawer, has spent the last three days puzzling the banknotes back together like a jigsaw – and will not stop until he has it all.

He told the Qingdao News: “I can’t and won’t blame my son. He’s still young, so he didn’t understand what he was doing.

“Some of the notes are torn into three or four pieces, and some were torn into a dozen.
