Francesco Prestia Lamberti was shot twice in the chest and left for dead in an olive field in Italy. But his killer has already handed himself in: 15-year-old Alex Pititto.
According to local media, Alex is the son of Ndrangheta mafia boss Salvatore Pititto, who is also known as El Tio or the Uncle.
What drove a teenage boy to shoot his friend? Apparently, Lamberti liked a picture on Facebook of Alex’s girlfriend. According to the Mirror, the teenager had long believed that Lamberti had feelings for his girlfriend, and liking her picture was an ultimate mark of a lack of respect.
One of Pititto’s social media posts reads: “Friendship is in my mouth to many but in the heart of few.”
His father, mother, brother and cousin were arrested earlier this year during a police crackdown on mafia operations.
There are roughly 6,000 members in the Ndrangheta mafia group.
They’re centred in Calabria and became the most powerful crime syndicate in Italy in the 1990s and 2000s. According to one US diplomat, the group’s business of drug smuggling, extortion and money laundering once accounted for three percent of Italy’s GDP in 2010.
There has been a huge outpouring of grief for Lamberti’s murder. With many friends posting on his Facebook wall tributes to the life of a man who was cut down by jealousy.
